The Casa do Artista Popular in João Pessoa was opened in 2004 with the goal of bringing together the different kinds of handicrafts and folk art from around the state of Paraíbana. The Casa do Artista Popular, gives artisans an opportunity to preserve the traditional crafts, history, beliefs and customs of the region.
At the Casa do Artista Popular there is a collection of more than 1000 pieces exhibited by artists from the Paraíbana’s hinterland and the backwoods of Cariri. Works are created of materials in nine forms: clay, wood, fiber, yarn, stone, metal, leather, handicrafts and indigenous raw material. There is also an exhibit that explains the processes used in creating traditional handicrafts particularly ceramics, woodcut, sculptures, cloth dolls and objects of tin.
The Casa do Artista Popular is a state government initiative that was made possible through the “The Paraíba in Your Hands” project, which was coordinated by the state’s first lady Silvia Cunha Lima.
The house is divided into different parts: there is the display area; a handicraft store, where visitors can by souvenirs of the handicrafts they have seen in the collection; a library of art and popular culture; a shop that sells the colored cotton of Paraíbana and a storehouse. The house is a wonderful place for visitors to see and understand the diverse handicrafts of the Paraíbana region.
