12 Children killed in bus-truck crash in Brazil

Twelve children were killed and 25 injured when a school bus collided with a truck in central Brazil.

The children, aged from six to 14, were returning home from Montividiu public school.

The accident occurred Monday when the truck driver lost control and rammed the vehicle into the bus coming from opposite direction, a Goias military police spokesman said.

Nine children, a woman and the drivers of both the vehicles died on the spot, police said.

The number of passengers on the bus has not been determined because it was the first day of school and a roster of riders had not yet been prepared, they said.

No Gas Pedal Recalls Needed In Brazil,Argentina

Toyota Rav4Toyota Motor Corp.’s quality concerns won’t affect vehicles in Brazil or Argentina, the company said Thursday.

The potential accelerator pedal flaw identified in the U.S., China and Europe doesn’t affect Toyota cars produced in Japan, Argentina and Brazil, the company said.

Toyota cars in Brazil and Argentina are either made in those two countries or in Japan, and as such there won’t be local recalls, the company said. (more…)

Eight dead, one missing in rainstorms in Brazil’s Sao Paulo

Eight people died in rainstorms which hit Brazil’s Sao Paulo metro area Thursday, local authorities said.

Rescue teams have found the bodies of the victims, who were killed by mudslides in the town of Santo Andre and other locations. One person remains missing in Ribeirao Pires.

According to the Sao Paulo authorities, the number of deaths caused by heavy rainstorms in the state since last December has reached 58.

Thursday’s storm caused severe damage in several parts of Sao Paulo. A total of 59 areas were flooded, including several highways across the city.

The Sao Paulo General Warehousing and Centers Company (Ceagesp), the largest food distribution center in Brazil, was flooded for the second time in two months.

Brazilian ministry publishes catalog of less polluting cars

The Brazilian Ministry of Environment Tuesday issued a ranking of different-grade environment-friendly cars according to their pollution reduction capability.

On the list of 402 domestic and imported vehicles, only 22 received the five-star evaluation, the highest score provided by the so-called Green Note methodology.

Environment Minister Carlos Minc said the ranking was aimed at creating positive competition among motor manufacturers to make less polluting vehicles. (more…)

Interlagos Raceway in Sao Paulo

The Interlagos Raceway in Sao Paulo, Brazil will stage the last race of the 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship, organizers announced on Saturday.

It will be the first time that the event is held on Brazilian soil.

Six teams – Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Maserati and Nissan – are already confirmed to compete in the 2010GT Championship.

The 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship will tour 12 different countries, starting in the United Arab Emirates, followed by South Africa, the Czech Republic, France, Canada, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Hungry, China and concluding in Brazil on November 28, 2010.
