Joao Pessoa is the first Capital of the Northeast and the third city in the country to have a system of public bicycles. The system was released on March 27th, 2010. The ‘Pedala Joao Pessoa’, is a system of bicycle rentals, with four stations distributed initially in the seafront of the capital, which aims to provide a healthier and eco means of transport to the people.
This innovative alternative of urban mobility is a realization of the Municipality of Joao Pessoa (PMJP), developed by the Superintendence of Transport and Traffic (STTrans).
The ‘Pedala Joao Pessoa’ is characterized as a technological solution for the sustainable use of bicycles, facilitating the movement of people in the capital and has already been deployed successfully in Rio de Janeiro and in Blumenau, Santa Catarina State.
The launch was attended by the Mayor Ricardo Coutinho and by the municipal secretaries. Those present at the launch event were already registered and might ride. In addition, users can do a monthly subscription to use the service or even purchase a day pass. Among the benefits to the city, the ‘Pedala Joao Pessoa’ will enable an improvement in people’s mobility and a reduction of pollutant emission.
Computerized system – the bikes are available in four terminal stations, installed in the seafronts of Tambaú, Cabo Branco and Manaíra. They will be managed by a computer powered by batteries and will feature a panel displaying information, such as map, location of stations, instructions and advertisements.
