Brazil creates 1.5 mln jobs in 1st half of 2010

July 15th, 2010

Brazilian Labor Minister Carlos Lupi

Brazilian Labor Minister Carlos Lupi said on Wednesday that 1.5 million jobs were created in the first half of 2010 in the country, a record high.

The official figures will be released on Thursday by the Labor Ministry. With Lupi’s prediction confirmed, the figures will surpass the 1.1 million jobs created in the first half of 2008.

During the same period in 2009, the Brazilian economy generated 299,000 jobs due to the international financial crisis.

In addition, Lupi reaffirmed his belief that the Brazilian economy would create 2.5 million jobs in 2010. If confirmed, the figures will also reach an all-time high.

The minister also commented on the figures released earlier in the day by the country’s central bank, according to which, Brazilian economic activity remained stable.

“(The economy) might not be expanding that much, but that is different from shrinking,” he said.
