SA has much to learn from Brazil: Zuma

October 9th, 2009
President Jacob Zuma

President Jacob Zuma

President Jacob Zuma says South Africa has a lot to learn from Brazil especially in the field of health and land reform. The president begins his two day state visit to the South American country where trade and sport are expected to top the agenda.

Zuma will address a business delegation in Sao Paulo today before proceeding to the capital Brasilia for talks with his Brazilian counterpart, Lula Da Silva. Trade issues are likely to dominate the visit. Trade has always favoured Brazil and South African businesses lament difficult access to the South American market.

“We will be having very specific discussions with the government to deal with issues that have been reported by our businesses as the kind of bottleneck issues that need to be widened a little bit so that the kind of relationship could flow smoothly,” says Zuma.

With Brazil also hosting the 2014 Soccer World Cup – sporting issues are bound to come up. SA and Brazil are two biggest economies in their regions and share a lot of similarities, among them an extreme gap between the rich and the poor as well as pursuing a common agenda on the international front.
