Acelino "Popo" Freitas

Four-time world boxing champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas of Brazil will be questioned by police investigating the murder of his niece’s boyfriend.

Authorities have been told by witnesses that Freitas allegedly ordered the killing because he didn’t approve of the man’s relationship with his 17-year-old niece.

Police made it clear on Wednesday they were not accusing the boxer of anything. Investigator Francineide Moura tells the private Agencia Estado news service that Freitas will be called to tell his story on Thursday.

Freitas’ press office says the boxer is not involved in the killing. Calls to police were not immediately answered.

Freitas won two lightweight and two super featherweight titles before retiring in 2006.
